Both the Shadowspec Serenity™ and the Unity™ are cantilever umbrellas. Both are hand-built in New Zealand, use the same marine-grade aluminium and 316 stainless steel construction, share the same SHADOWLIFT™ gas-assisted opening system, and come with the same 6-year frame and 10-year Sunbrella® fabric warranty. The mechanisms, the materials, and the warranty are identical.

The decision between them is not about quality. It is about what your space needs.
This article works through the structural difference between the two models. It maps each to the spaces and use cases it suits. It gives you a clear decision framework.

The one difference that matters

The Serenity™ is a single-canopy rotating cantilever. One mast, one canopy, one shaded zone.

The Unity™ is a modular multi-canopy cantilever. One mast, up to four canopies, multiple independent shaded zones.

Shadowspec describes the Unity™ directly: "the reinforced mast has a modular design to allow the mounting of up to 4 canopies, giving you the ability to maximise coverage and the flexibility to create shade where you need it."

Everything else, from the mechanism to the materials to the warranty, is shared.

If you need shade for one zone from one mast, the Serenity™ is the answer. If you need shade for two, three or four zones from one installation point, the Unity™ is the answer. The decision is almost always that straightforward.

Shadowspec Serenity™: the single-canopy rotating cantilever

What it is

The Serenity™ is Shadowspec's flagship single-canopy residential and commercial cantilever umbrella. It is the model we most often specify for Malaysian pool decks, residential terraces, and F&B installations up to about six covers per umbrella position.

Shadowspec describes it as a "single canopy rotating cantilever umbrella" and the system as "the new standard in shade."

The SHADOWLOCK™ rotation system

The Serenity™'s 360-degree rotation is driven by the SHADOWLOCK™ system, integrated into the mast. The base has 16 locking positions through the full rotation.

In Malaysian conditions, this rotation is not a convenience feature. The sun angle shifts significantly from morning to afternoon. A fixed canopy that shades a pool deck at 10 am may leave it exposed by 2 pm. The Serenity™ rotates to follow the sun without moving the base.

Available configurations

  • Canopy sizes: 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0m.
  • Frame colours: Space Grey and Heron Black.
  • Mounting: surface plate, in-ground anchor, wall bracket, freestanding base.
  • Canopy: Sunbrella® (or equivalent) solution-dyed acrylic, UPF 80+.
  • Warranty: 6-year frame, 10-year canopy fabric.

Best suited to

  • Residential pool terrace: one to two lounger positions per umbrella.
  • F&B terrace, 2 to 6 covers: cantilever, mast outside seating.
  • Rooftop amenity deck: one defined shaded zone per installation.
  • Condominium sky lounge: single-zone coverage from a wall bracket or deck plate.

Shadowspec Unity™: the multi-canopy cantilever

What it is

The Unity™ shares every mechanism and material with the Serenity™. The structural difference is the mast design. The Unity™ mast is modular, engineered to carry between one and four canopy arms from a single installation point.

Shadowspec publishes the total coverage figure directly: "this cantilever, modular design allows for up to 36m2 of shade" from one mast.

The Duo, Trio and Quattro configurations

The Unity™ mast accepts two, three or four canopy arms. Each configuration has a name.

Config Arms Max Coverage Typical Application
Uno 1 Up to 16m2 Single zone; similar to Serenity™
Duo 2 Up to 32m2 Two zones; F&B frontage or pool deck
Trio 3 Up to 27m2 Three zones; resort or large terrace
Quattro 4 Up to 36m2 Four zones; resort pool deck

The independent arm advantage

Each canopy arm on the Unity™ opens and closes independently. In Malaysian conditions, this has a specific operational value.

When a Sumatran squall approaches, a resort team can close the windward arms first. Partial shade is maintained on the sheltered side while gust load on the structure is reduced. A single large canopy of equivalent area has no equivalent flexibility.

We covered the wind response protocol in detail in our wind ratings article. Read: Outdoor umbrella wind ratings explained.

Best suited to

  • Resort pool deck, 6+ loungers: Duo or Quattro configuration.
  • F&B long frontage: Duo or Trio, single mast.
  • Large residential terrace: Duo for multi-zone coverage, one base footprint.
  • Condominium amenity deck: Trio or Quattro across pool and lounge zones.
  • Developer project, uniform specification: same mast, multiple arms, repeatable.

What they share: the engineering that applies to both

Both models are built at the Shadowspec facility in New Zealand. Shadowspec holds the New Zealand FernMark licence, the government-backed symbol confirming the products are made in New Zealand, not offshore.

The shared specification across both models:

  • Frame: marine-grade aluminium, heat-treated for structural strength.
  • Fittings: 316 stainless steel throughout.
  • Opening: SHADOWLIFT™ gas-assisted, opens in 5 seconds.
  • Mechanism: SHADOWGLIDE™ patented carriage, 9 contact points, no internal cables.
  • Rotation: 360-degree with SHADOWLOCK™, 16 locking positions.
  • Canopy: Sunbrella® or Recasens® solution-dyed acrylic, UPF 80+.
  • Warranty: 6 years frame, 10 years canopy fabric.

The decision: how to choose

Answer two questions.

First: how many separate shaded zones do you need from one mast position? One zone means Serenity™. Two or more means Unity™.

Second: does the shaded area need to change configuration between uses? A fixed dining setting suits the Serenity™. A resort pool deck that alternates between lounger layout and event setup benefits from the Unity™'s independent arm configuration.

If the answer to both questions is ambiguous, the Unity™ Duo is the conservative choice. It costs more than the Serenity™ in the equivalent canopy size. It provides meaningful additional flexibility. For a commercial installation where the space will evolve over a 6-year warranty period, that flexibility has a real value.
