Umbrello Malaysia · Specification Guide · 9 min read
No local outdoor umbrella supplier in Malaysia publishes a specification guide for architects. We checked. This article is the one that should exist.
It covers everything a Malaysian architect or interior designer needs to specify a commercial-grade outdoor umbrella with confidence. That means wind load data, passive shading compliance, canopy fire ratings, base fixing details, and where to download CAD and BIM files.
We carry the Shadowspec commercial range as the Malaysian distributor. The specification information below applies to that range. Where the information is general, we say so.
Why outdoor umbrella specification is a gap in Malaysia
Architects and ID firms specifying outdoor shade in Malaysia face a common problem. Product catalogues show dimensions and colours. They do not show wind load ratings, canopy fire classifications, fixing details, or compliance language.
The result: specifiers either omit shade structures from drawings entirely, or specify a generic item and let the contractor procure whatever is available. Neither outcome serves the client or the building.
Shadowspec provides a full design resources library: 2D and 3D files, CAD drawings, Revit families, IFC and DXF formats, and individual spec sheets by model. That library is available to Malaysian specifiers through Umbrello Malaysia at no cost.
No local competitor offers a single architect-facing specification document. That gap is the reason this article exists.
Step 1: Understand the wind load requirement for the site
Wind load is the most important structural variable for any outdoor shade structure. In Malaysia, it is also the most frequently omitted from specifications.
The relevant data for a Malaysian site comes from two sources. MS EN 1991-1-4 (Eurocode 1, Part 1-4) governs wind actions on structures and is referenced by Malaysian engineers for structural sign-off on commercial projects. For a more practical starting point, our rooftop measurement article documents real gust data from a KL commercial site.
Reference: What we measured on a KL rooftop: UV, wind and rain data.
For specification purposes, the wind ratings we use across the Shadowspec commercial range are:
| Condition | Wind Speed | Shadowspec Rating | Practical Meaning |
| Operational (open) | Up to 40 km/h sustained | Rated open | Normal Malaysian trade winds |
| Close and Secure | 30 km/h sustained | Staff protocol | Pre-squall standard in Malaysia |
| Structural (closed) | Up to 80 km/h sustained |
Closed position | Sumatran squall tolerance |
| Coastal / rooftop sites | Engineer assessment required |
Site specific | Confirm with project SE |
For rooftop terraces, elevated pool decks, and coastal sites in Penang, Langkawi, or Port Dickson, we recommend involving the project structural engineer early. A fixed anchor plate rather than a freestanding base is the correct specification for exposed permanent installations.
The specification note to include in your drawing set is straightforward:
Outdoor umbrella to be Shadowspec commercial grade. Wind rating: 40 km/h operational, 80 km/h structural (closed). Base specification to be confirmed by structural engineer for exposed rooftop or coastal installations.
Step 2: Position the umbrella relative to MS1525 passive shading
MS1525 is Malaysia's Code of Practice on Energy Efficiency for non-residential buildings. Section 4 covers architectural and passive design strategy, including external shading devices that reduce solar heat gain through glazing.
A correctly placed large canopy umbrella qualifies as an external shading device under passive design principles. This is relevant to GBI (Green Building Index) and GreenRE submissions where outdoor shading contributes to reduced OTTV calculations.
For an umbrella to function as a passive shading element, three conditions apply:
- Must shade east or west-facing glazing or occupied areas.
- The shading period must align with peak solar gain hours.
- The canopy UPF rating must be documented in the submission.
Sunbrella®-grade solution-dyed acrylic, which is standard across the Shadowspec commercial range, carries a UPF 50+ rating. This rating is inherent to the fabric weave, not a surface coating. It does not degrade over the product's service life.
For GBI or GreenRE submissions, request the Sunbrella® fabric technical data sheet from us. It includes UPF rating, solar transmittance, and colour reflectance values suitable for compliance documentation.
Step 3: Specify the canopy fire rating
For commercial projects involving F&B, hospitality, or public assembly areas, canopy fire performance is a relevant specification point. This is particularly true for semi-enclosed outdoor areas where Bomba classification may apply.
Sunbrella® solution-dyed acrylic fabric used across the Shadowspec commercial range holds the following fire performance certifications:
- California Technical Bulletin 117 (ASTM seating test reference standard)
- NFPA 701 Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Flame Propagation
- British Standard BS 5438 and BS 7837 (European flame spread reference)
For Malaysian projects requiring formal Bomba documentation, we recommend requesting the Sunbrella® fire performance data sheet and engaging your Bomba consultant to confirm classification for the specific use. We provide the technical data sheet on request.
A note on alternatives: Olefin and standard polyester canopy fabrics do not carry equivalent fire performance ratings. If fire performance is a specification requirement on your project, solution-dyed acrylic is the correct fabric to specify.
Specify canopy fabric as solution-dyed acrylic, UPF 50+ rated, with fire performance certification to NFPA 701 or equivalent. Request technical data sheet from Umbrello Malaysia.
Step 4: Select the correct base and fixing detail
he base and fixing specification is the detail most often left to the contractor. On commercial projects, that is a procurement risk. There are three base types available across the Shadowspec range, each suited to a different installation condition.
Freestanding weighted base
Applicable to: temporary or semi-permanent installations, tiled or paved surfaces where core drilling is not permitted.
- Minimum base weight for 3 m canopy: 80 kg.
- Minimum base weight for 4 m canopy: 120 kg.
- Not recommended for exposed rooftop or coastal sites.
- Requires annual inspection of base integrity.
Decking plate anchor
Applicable to: timber decking, composite decking, or raised platform installations where a subsurface fixing point is accessible.
- Plate anchors to structural framing below decking.
- Fixing detail available in Shadowspec CAD library.
- Confirm load path with structural engineer on elevated decks.
Concrete anchor (in-ground or core-drilled)
Applicable to: permanent rooftop installations, concrete pool decks, high-wind-exposure sites.
- Core-drill and chemically anchor into structural slab.
- Minimum 200 mm core depth into concrete substrate.
- Coordinate with structural engineer for slab loading.
- This is the specification for all rooftop installations.
Fixing details for all three base types are included in the Shadowspec CAD library as dimensioned PDF drawings. Download the relevant drawing and insert it into your specification package.
Step 5: Access the CAD and BIM file library
Shadowspec provides one of the most complete umbrella CAD libraries available from any commercial shade manufacturer. Files are available for every cantilever model and configuration, in nine formats.
| File format | Software compatibility | Best for |
| Revit (.RFA) | Autodesk Revit | BIM projects, GBI documentation |
| DXF | AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight | 2D site plans, layout drawings |
| IFC | ArchiCAD, Vector works, open BIM | Open BIM workflows, IFC submissions |
| SketchUp (.SKP) | SketchUp, Trimble | Design development, client presentations |

The specification decision in brief
The architect specification decision for outdoor umbrella shade in Malaysia comes down to four choices. Get these four right and the product and documentation follow from them.
| Decision | Options | Malaysian context |
| Format | Cantilever / Center Pole / Wall-Mounted | Cantilever for most commercial sites; wall-mount for narrow terraces |
| Canopy fabric | Solution-dyed acrylic (Specify Sunbrella®) | UPF 50+, NFPA 701, up to 10 year warranty; essential in UV 10+ conditions |
| Wind rating | Confirm operational and structural ratings | 40 km/h open, 80 km/h closed, SE sign-off for rooftop sites |
| Base fixing | Freestanding / decking plate / concrete anchor | Concrete anchor for all permanent rooftop and coastal installs |
